Wold Snowshoe Championships ~ Syl Corbett

The World Snowshoe Invitational and Canadian Snowshoe Championships were held during the Olympics atop Grouse Mountain, BC. The event showcased a star studded field of international athletes. The 10k course was a challenging mix on steep ascent, descents and single track. The venue was a resounding hit gaining huge exposure for the sport and for the companies that endorsed the event. Kicking Horse, Ultima, Go Macro and Honey Stinger products were showcased at the forefront with center-stage attention. Such support was a key contributing factor to the enormous success of this world class competition. I was thrilled to come away with a bronze medal at the Worlds and retain the title of Canadian Snowshoe Champion. Fortunately, I too was fueled by these same sports nutrition products that endorsed the event. A win-win for all involved. Thanks so very much for your ongoing belief in my athletic career and your enhancement of the sporting world as a whole.

Sweet Potato & Cinnamon Brownies

1 cup w. wheat flour
½ cup unsweetened cocoa
1 tbs. cinnamon
1 tsp baking powder
¼ tsp. salt
1 cup cooked sweet potato
½ agave nectar
¼ cup olive oil
1 tsp vanilla
6 egg whites

Mix dry ingred., puree wet ingred. till smooth. Combine and bake 16-18 minutes at 350.

Planet Foods wants to thank Luna for her beautiful performance. Enjoy the Sharkies & the Kicking Horse Coffee at the Alberta Suzuki String Institute this Summer!

The Alberta Suzuki String Institute, approved and promoted by the Suzuki Association of the Americas, is an opportunity for Suzuki students of all ages and their families to come together to share in motivating and enriching musical experiences. Students will be tutored and inspired by master teachers in improving both technical skills and musical expression. Registrants will also have the opportunity to participate in enrichment classes, performances and recitals.

ASSI participants will leave the institute this summer with a greater appreciation and understanding of the Baroque time period and the great composers such as Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi. Suzuki students have first-hand experience with the literature of these masters and further exploration will enhance their appreciation of the works they have already performed and/or will soon be performing. Participants will have exposure to the instruments of the Baroque time period and the string family of this era. The famous dance pieces so common in the Suzuki literature will come alive as students learn, for example, what the Minuet steps feel like and how the music fits with the movement. See you this summer in Calgary, a city settled in the valley of the beautiful Bow River, for Baroque on the Bow, a truly enriching Suzuki string experience!

We would like to wish Keith Stark ,our Vancouver Key Account Manager, and his team mate Mike Hunter all the best in the BC Bike Race this Weekend!

Keith is a former Canadian National Champion and BC Cup Champion, and was a 5 time national team member in both road and mountain bike. His favorite foods to fuel his rides are Ultima Replenisher Orange, Honey Stinger Pomegranate Energy Chews, Sharkies Citrus Chews, and Honey Stinger Coconut Pro Bars.

Mike Hinter, Keith's Team mate for the BC Bike Race, is the current masters BC Champion and is leading the BC cup again this year!

Downward Facing Dog

Everyone who remembers their first yoga class will probably admit to giggling at the term "downward facing dog". But when you learn to relax into this pose, it quickly becomes one of your favorites. It is interesting to look at the origins of this pose - It really is quite similar to the streach Fido does when getting up from a nap.

Yoga Journal says: Down Dog calms the brain and helps relieve stress and mild depression; it helps relieve the symptoms of menopause; it relieves menstrual discomfort when done with the head supported; it helps prevent osteoporosis; it improves digestion; it relieves headaches, insomnia, back pain, and fatigue; and it is therapeutic for high blood pressure, asthma, flat feet, sciatica, and sinusitis.

Maple-Flavored Scallops With Watercress Sauce

Serves 4

12 large scallops

Marinade:

1 tsp ground cumin

1 tsp curry powder

½ tsp ground coriander seeds

1 tbsp Maple Flakes

2 tbsp olive oil

1 green onion, minced

Watercress sauce:

1 tbsp butter

2 green onions, minced

2 cups (500 mL) watercress

½ cup (125 mL) chicken stock

½ cup (125 mL) 35% cream 1 tsp flour + 1 tsp butter = beurre maniéSalt and pepper to tasteWatercress leaves for garnish

In a bowl, combine scallops and marinade ingredients. Marinate for 1 to 2 hours in the refrigerator.

In a saucepan, melt butter to sweat the green onions and watercress... Add chicken stock and cream. Simmer for 1 to 2 minutes over low heat and add beurre manié. Season with salt and pepper. Purée sauce in a food processor and return to pan.

Melt a dollop of butter in a frying pan. Cook scallops for 2 to 3 minutes per side. Pour a thin layer of watercress sauce onto plates, add scallops, and garnish with watercress leaves.
